learning skills

I just read the piece on the TAKS test in Texas and it really shocked me. Its the same here in Australia. I'm in grade 11 and I'm constantly missing my real lessons to do a "learning skills" course. A course that teaches us how to best answer exam questions and study properly. I'm all for this stuff being taught to grade 7 or 8s, but its of no use to someone in their last 2 or 3 years of schooling.
Even in regular lessons I am learning the topics most likely to be on an exam. Teachers dont "waste time" with anything that we won't be graded on no matter how it may benefit us.
It gets me thinking, they spend all their time teaching us learning skills, but then there won't be anything to use the skills on.
