When I originally approached writing an essay on this song, I started what would have eventually become just another long-winded article that most people would just skim over. What I recognize as the idea behind this song I think is pretty simple. Sometimes simplicity is best and that’s why I want to keep this short and sweet for you.
I think this song is about getting involved. That is, getting involved with the world around you. Speaking up, not just sitting there with your hand in the air waiting to be called on. Far too often, governments and powerful organizations wrap up their ideas into a neat, little, marketable package and sell them off. Far too often, those nicely wrapped packages don’t ever actually get to the heart of what their ideas really are.
I think it’s obvious that this is anti-war song. It’s a song about peace. It’s a song that questions the actions of our government. More importantly this is a song about critical thought. When lies are neatly wrapped in statements that front as facts, they are easy to swallow and it's hard to determine the lies from the facts. It’s important to read and educate yourself about the world events that are happening around you. It’s important to understand all sides of the arguments that are thrown at you. What’s most important, however, is that you think. I’m going to stop short before this comes to selling my ideas.
The time you would have spent reading the rest of this essay, can now be spent doing something far more important. THINKING.
“It’s up to you to see through the lies by those who’ve led us to the endless world strife. What the world needs is something new! What the world needs right now is you!”
